UK hotel prices drop significantly as hotel owners try to tempt holidaymakers to stay at home

According to figures released this week by Hotels.com, UK hotel room prices fell 12% to £93 per night in the last three months of 2008, compared with the same period in 2007

In contrast British tourists are having to pay more for accommodation at many popular overseas destinations, supporting suggestions that Brits will turn their backs on destinations such as Spain and are instead planning to spend this years holidays in the UK.

But it’s not just Spain where prices are soaring, one night in a Swiss hotel rose, on average, to £120 – an increase of 22% – and France, Holland and Greece saw rises of 11%, 14% and 15% respectively.

Figures for individual cities showed average London hotel room rates dipping 12%, Edinburgh prices falling from £99 to £95 and Belfast room rates down 17% to £83. Bucking the trend was Cardiff, where average prices rose slightly from £87 at the end of 2007 to £93 at the end of last year.

The most expensive city at the end of 2008 was Moscow with rooms costing an average of £207 a night, although the biggest percentage increase was in Rio de Janeiro, where room rates rose 63% to £164 at the end of last year.

Other destinations with rising prices included, Geneva up 34% to £136, Zurich up 20% to £119, Washington DC up 18% to £115 per night, Paris rising 13% to £112 and Munich up 10% to £93.

The least expensive major city at the end of last year was the Latvian capital Riga where average rooms cost just £50 a night.

Hotels.com worldwide president David Roche said: “Our report shows that hoteliers around the world are being forced to cut rates to fill their rooms.

“Due to weak sterling, UK travellers will have to work a bit harder to find the bargains but there are still plenty to be had.

“For travellers from any part of the world, this is a great time to explore: travel has not been this cheap since January 2004.”

“The indications are that 2009 will continue to be a good year for travellers. If sterling strengthens, UK travellers will start enjoying the great savings our European and US counterparts are currently experiencing.”

Overall, the average price for a night in a UK hotel fell to £93 in the last three months of 2008.

Hotel near to Victoria Palace Theatre, London.?

I am planning a theatre break for my parents, and would like to book a hotel central to the victoria palace theatre – it should be nice, as it is for their 40th anniversary. Any help would be appreciated.

The whole area is nothing BUT hotels, so you should have no trouble finding one ! ! !

According to the London Theatre Guide link (below) the running time is 3 hours. It doesn’t state whether that is including the interval or excluding it, so I suggest you should check with the Box Office:

Does anyone know a good website to go on for show/hotel packages in London, end of November?
going to London on the 23-25th November and would like to take in a show..trip to the London eye, Tussauds, Planetarium etc. Is there a good website to go on to find the best deals?

it would be for 2 adults and 1 child, and Im thinking of maybe Regents Palace/Cavendish…certainly a central hotel location.

I found one company which offers a guaranteed lowest price, so you could try a few others and check them against that one. The show and hotel packages are great if it’s one of the popular musicals that you want to see, but if it’s something less touristy then you could always buy lastminute tickets on the day when you get there, and see two shows altogether. The Planetarium is closed now, I think.

Free or cheap place to crash for a few hours around Waterloo Station and/or Eurostar?

Over spring break, first week of April, I’ll be traveling from L. A. to JFK in New York, then on to London, landing around noon London time. Then about 4pm I’ll take the Eurostar to Brussels. Is there ANYWHERE in Waterloo Station or the Eurostar terminal or even nearby where I can crash for just a few hours? I’d prefer not to pay for a hotel room. What I really need is just a place to doss for a little while until it’s time to catch my train. I just need to get over most of the jetlag and get on European time before I proceed. Any help at all would be most appreciated. Cheers and thanks, K

If you are scheduled to land at noon, and then take the Eurostar at 4pm, I don’t think you’ll have time to ‘crash’! Four hours seems barely adequate time to clear Customs and get from Heathrow to Central London, you’ll probably have enough time to grab a coffee!

we want to have a short breaks from london to paris for 4 or 5 nights with eurostar. Any body knows any place I can get the best price for the whole package

The 2 best priced packages I bought with the Eurostar were found on lastminute.com, my partner and I went to Brussels for 3 days and also to Paris a few months later. Might be worth the try, I don’t know if ours were specials or just standard fares but both times the hotels were ideally located and they were very good
